About Helen Tomlin
I always knew I wanted a career that involved working with people, and I knew my skill set suited a career in litigation; I am very stubborn when I want to be, and hold an unshakeable belief that every human being deserves to be treated with respect and compassion. A career in trade union law seemed like a good fit.
I joined Thompsons in their Leeds office in 2004. I started as a case handler in the industrial disease litigation department, handling a large caseload of mainly asbestos related claims. In 2007, Thompsons took the decision to promote specialisation, and a dedicated asbestos team was set up in each region. I was selected to lead the asbestos team in the Yorkshire region, and became the Regional Asbestos Team Supervisor.
Following specialisation, the asbestos team has grown from strength to strength. We only act ever act on behalf of Claimants, and never on behalf of the insurers or Defendants, and we deal with many thousands of asbestos claims every year. We won the very first asbestos case in the UK, back in 1972. We assist people whether they are trade union members or not. We spend a lot of time working with the sufferers of asbestos related disease and their families, to pursue claims against their former employers. We also devote a lot of time to supporting various asbestos support groups, who do sterling work in our region to obtain benefits and provide advice to the sufferers. We keep up to date with all the latest medical research, and obtain payments from Defendants to help our clients access ground-breaking private treatments that are not available on the NHS. Our work with our various Trade Unions is also at the centre of everything we do; to be the best provider of legal services to Trade Union members and their families.
I fight hard on behalf of all my clients; the callous way the employers treated their employees, and their subsequent attempts to avoid their responsibilities, angers me, and I am determined to fight for justice on behalf of the workers and their families.
