I am a Registered General Nurse.  I trained at St. James’s University Hospital, Leeds, West Yorkshire.  I have 18 years of experience of caring for patients both in hospital and in the community.

My hospital nursing experience encompasses caring for patients in both surgical and medical settings.

Since 1991 I have become more specifically involved in caring for patients who are terminally ill.  I have worked in hospice inpatient and day patient units.

I have fourteen years experience as a district nurse, caring for a patients with medical problems and post-operative needs and for those who are chronically or terminally ill.  I continue to work as a district nurse, caring for patients in their homes who have chronic and acute and terminal illnesses.

I have been involved in setting up policies and protocols within Primary Health Care Teams and community hospital to develop and enhance care for terminally ill patients and their families. I undertook further study on “Care of the Dying Patient and Family” (ENB 931) at Coventry University in 1997.

In 1997 I founded a hospice at home service in South Warwickshire.  I was senior nurse of this service for 4 years and since then I have been a trustee.  The aim of the service is to provide appropriate specialised nursing care to patients in the community and involves close liaison with General Practitioners, District Nurses, Macmillan Nurses and local hospitals/hospices.  I have developed training programs for the nurses and carers who work for the service.  I have continued to update myself on current issues in general nursing, oncology and  palliative care.

Over the past nine years, I have developed a special interest and knowledge in respiratory and asbestos-related diseases.  I have written care reports for the Court on several hundred people whose health has been affected by asbestos-related disease.  I have been instructed as an expert by both claimants and  defendants.  I have been instructed as a single joint expert. I have given oral evidence in the High Court.

I also work as a case manager and within this role I have developed a complex “line of sight” package of care for a young man with complex health care needs for a local Primary Care Trust and I have developed and managed packages of care for chronically and terminally ill clients.  I liaise with all professionals involved in my clients’ care, aiming to provide a holistic package of care.  Mv role involves recruitment of care/support workers for specific clients, developing staff training and supervision, risk management of clients, their activities and environments.  I oversee payroll and other administrative duties associated with my management role.  I am a member of the British Association of Brain Injury Case Managers.
