Q. Is there a central searchable database listing employers’ liability insurers for defunct companies? A. Unfortunately not. Since the 2010 election, APIL has continued to lobby for a fund of last resort for people who can’t trace the insurers of their former employers (ie an Employers Liability Insurance Bureau, or ELIB), backed by an electronic database of historic insurers. In the meantime, APIL’s briefing note on ways to trace insurers can be found here: Tracing Insurers briefing note.
You can also post a search request on APIL's forum here: Insurer Search Forum
or search our own online database here: Insurers Search database

Q. Cancellation of Contracts made in a Consumer's Home or Place of Work etc. Regulations 2008. Do these apply to solicitors retainers and if so, where can I find out more information? A. These Regulations [SI 2008/1816] came into force on 1 October 2008. Although they are designed to apply to double-glazing sales staff and other door-step vendors, they are so generally drafted that they do not exclude professional services. APIL produced a briefing note on the regulations which can be found here: Cancellation of contracts
