Asbestos related diseases
About Ian Toft
I am a Partner and the Head of the Asbestos-Related Disease Team in Leeds. I have over 20 years’ experience working exclusively for claimants with mesothelioma, asbestosis and pleural thickening. I have helped a wide range of people including laggers, engineers, teachers, architects, police officers, office workers, surveyors, joiners, plumbers, and electricians.
I am passionate about my work and lecture widely about this specialist field. I also work closely with healthcare professionals to support the needs of sufferers.
The treatments available to mesothelioma suffers are changing at a breath-taking rate. I understand that securing access to potentially life extending therapies is of the utmost priority for my clients.
To this end, I have secured agreements with defendant insurers to cover the costs of future private cancer treatment for clients with mesothelioma, including immunotherapy. This included a ’land mark agreement’, one of the first of its kind, where an insurer paid for the future treatment costs so long as they were recommended by the client’s treating doctors. This meant that the insurers could not rely on their own doctors to avoid paying and ensured access to vital therapies.
It is crucial for victims who suffer from asbestos related diseases to receive all relevant government benefits as fast as possible to enable them to access support, purchase aids, equipment and other help with management of their disease. I work closely with our Client Liaison Manager who is a Palliative Occupational Therapist to help clients navigate the range of benefits and support services available and I do my utmost to support clients through their journey.
The team and I raise funds for charities and we have participated in the Leeds and Hull 10k run. The Leeds team has recovered over £330,000 for hospices within the region following a landmark High Court ruling in a 2010 case led by Irwin Mitchell.
I have extensive experience in both the High Court and Court of Appeal. I always strive to provide swift, accurate and expert assistance to people suffering from the effects of mesothelioma.
