Time to regulate beauty treatment industry

12 Aug 2025
APIL news

Cosmetic treatments which do not require surgery, such as Botox, dermal fillers, and liquid Brazilian butt lifts, are rocketing in popularity. Many people having these treatments may be unaware that this industry is as yet largely unregulated.

All too often we hear of some such beauty treatments going horribly wrong. Cases include people left with severe scarring to their faces from botched chemical peels. And fat loss injections can cause tissue to die and abscesses which needed surgical removal, leaving behind permanent scars.

Those carrying out procedures must be licensed so consumers can choose practitioners they know are competent. It must be compulsory to have the correct insurance so if people are injured due to negligent treatment, they can claim redress to help get their lives back on track.

The Government has now announced it will now consult publicly on new regulations for the industry. The sooner this burgeoning sector is regulated in England, the safer consumers will be.
