Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, St Mark's The National Bowel Hospital
Carolynne Jane Vaizey was educated at Cape Town University and then trained in General and Trauma Surgery up to Consultant level in Johannesburg. On returning to this country in 1992 she worked as a Colorectal Surgical Fellow in a District General Hospital and took the UK surgical examinations. She then took up a research post at St Mark’s Hospital to obtain an MD through the University of London.
At the beginning of 1998 she became a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at the Middlesex & University College Hospitals in Central London and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College London. In 2003 she took up a new post as Consultant Surgeon at St Mark’s Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College. She was the Divisional Clinical Director of the Hospital 2019 - 2024.
Miss Vaizey has particular interests in the management of intestinal failure and surgical disasters, severe Crohn’s, faecal incontinence, anal surgery and functional bowel disease. She is the Lead Surgeon for Intestinal Failure and for the Pelvic Floor at St Mark’s and Director of the Physiology unit. She has written 24 book chapters on her specialty interests and has over 195 papers and editorials published or in press.
Miss Vaizey has been Chair of The Pelvic Floor Society and Chair of the Intestinal Failure Subcommittee of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland. She is the current Secretary of the European Society of Coloproctology and previously chaired their Guidelines Committee. She has been elected as the President in Waiting for the European Society of Coloproctology from September 2026 which will lead to her Presidency in 2028.
She has been an advisor to NHS England on Intestinal Failure Services in England and on the use of mesh in the pelvis. She is a current member of their Neuromodulation Group. She is a Member and Director of the James IV Association of Surgeons, an exclusive group of 100 surgical leaders from around the world.
