Overview
In recent years, the difference between initial Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) awards and those granted at appeal has widened significantly. In 2024/25, the average initial offer of £7,710 increased by more than £48,000 at appeal - to £55,800 - representing a 624% increase. This growing disparity highlights serious concerns about how initial offers are assessed and the importance of robust, well-prepared appeals on behalf of victims and survivors.
This masterclass, presented by Neil Sugarman, provides a detailed and practical exploration of the CICA appeals process. Delegates will examine the legislative framework, procedural rules, and practical considerations for maximising outcomes in appeal cases. From time limits and evidence gathering to drafting appeals and navigating post-hearing steps, this session will equip practitioners with the tools and confidence to advocate effectively for clients.
